DIOCESE OF PARRAMATTA REPORT: Catholic Diocese of Parramatta seminarian Thomas Bui was instituted as a lector by Most Rev Anthony Fisher OP at St Patrick's Cathedral on Sunday 10 July.
"In Jesus Christ the Word of God, spoken by the Father from all eternity, was spoken in time to us. In Christ the divine Word took human flesh," Bishop Anthony said in his homily.
"Through Him all things necessary to us were made known and then entrusted to the Church to be proclaimed to all the world, from Jerusalem to Quang Tri in Central Vietnam, from Rome to Parramatta."
Bishop Anthony said that as a reader and in due course a preacher of God’s word, Thomas will assist in this mission, assuming a special office as lector within the Christian community.
"You will be given a responsibility in the service of the Faith, which is always rooted in the word of God," Bishop Anthony said.
"From today you may proclaim that word in the liturgical assembly, catechise children and adults, and prepare people to receive the sacraments worthily.
"You will also bring the message of salvation to those who have not yet received it. Thus with your help men and women will come to know God our Father and Christ whose Word He spoke to us so that we might have eternal life.
"Take that Word deeply to heart, ponder it day and night, so that each day your love of the Scriptures deepens. In all you say and do you show forth to the world our Saviour, Jesus Christ, and the Creator Father of this wonderful creation, so that in the words of our First Reading the Word that goes forth from the mouth of God may not return empty but may accomplish that for which it was spoken."
