AFRICA : KENYA : BISHOP SAYS BE SIMPLE AND HUMBLE - MESSENGERS OF PEACE

CISA REPORT
Be-Simple,-Bishop-Korir-Urges-Priests
ELDORET, October 9, 2012 (CISA) –Catholic Bishop of Eldoret diocese Rt Rev Cornelius Korir has urged priests to be exemplar in their lives by leading a life of humility and simplicity, avoiding extravagance.
He said that the church should not be used as a way of acquiring riches as this goes contrary to gospel teachings.
“If you came to search for richness, that is not possible in the church. Be simple. Jesus left us an example; eat what is offered to you. Do not ask for what your hosts can not afford. In this way one is not a burden to the community where he is sent to serve,” said bishop Korir.
He was speaking on October 6 at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral grounds, Eldoret, during the ordination of six new priests.
He told the newly ordained to appreciate the gift of priesthood received from God and that is given even before one is born. He told them to endeavour to be messengers of peace in all their future pastoral assignments. He also thanked parents of all priests, brothers and sisters for allowing their sons and daughters to serve the church.
The mass was concelebrated by Rt Rev Maurice Crowley, Bishop of Kitale, Rev Fr Hieronymus Joya, and the Regional Superior of the Consolata Missionaries and attended by over 100 priests.
Bishop Crowley told the new priests to “be real servants of the people and practice poverty until you die. Do not love money above anything else. In dire situations, walk to do your pastoral duties and do not always rely on cars.”
Fr Joya again thanked parents of the newly ordained for supporting their sons to the end. He also thanked their teachers and formators in the seminary and urged the Laity “to fully support the priests in their ministry and try to evangelize alongside the priest in order to improve our faith. I also urge the young who feel called to serve in the church to come forward and fulfill their vocation.”
Among the six new priests was Fr James Mwaura Mbugua, a Consolata Missionary who has been sent to spread the Good News in Brazil.
